This Italian Chicken Burger is a nice change up from the classic cheeseburger and it’s lighter and healthier!

Grilled Italian Chicken Burgers Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Pounds, ground chicken
  • 1 Tablespoon onion, grated
  • 1 Garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 Teaspoon, dried oregano
  • 1/4 Cup, grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 Cup, plain breadcrumbs
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
Ingredients

How to make

The best part about any burger is that it takes mere minutes to form a patty. Start by grating your onion. I like to grate my onion because it pulls out the onion juice which gives nice flavor to the chicken burger. Next, place the ground chicken into a bowl and add the Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs, oregano, grated onion, salt and pepper to taste.

Before combining the ingredients, I place wax paper on the table and spray it with PAM. To reduce stickiness, I rinse my hands under water before mixing and forming the Grilled Italian Chicken Burgers. You will end up with 4 chicken burgers.

When ready to grill, heat to high. Once again I use PAM to ensure that the Grilled Italian Chicken Burger doesn’t stick to anything. When the grill is ready I spray one side of the burger with PAM and place that side face down. Grill for 4 minutes and before flipping the burgers over spray with PAM. Once flipped, place a thick slice of mozzarella cheese on top. Grill for another 4 minutes. The internal temperature for chicken is 165ºF should you want to make sure they are fully cooked. Regardless, these burgers should not go beyond 10 minutes on the grill, otherwise you will end up with a dry chicken burger.

I like to toast the buns on the grill (20 seconds) before assembling, but by all means leave your buns soft. Ain’t nothing wrong with some soft buns!! Place the Grilled Italian Chicken Burger on the bun, top with some Spicy Marinara, or your favorite tomato sauce and fresh basil. To keep this dinner on the “lighter” side of things, try out my Barley Salad or Chayote Salad recipe, for a side dish.

Where’s the beef?

Does anyone remember that commercial circa 1980’s with the old ladies inspecting a competitor’s burger and claiming that there was hardly any meat? I tell you, the 80’s were the best!!

I can tell you that there is no lack of “meat” in the Grilled Italian Chicken Burger. I was just reminiscing. But, I encourage you to try beef instead of the chicken. I remember reading a cooking magazine (and for those of you that don’t know me that well, I really don’t like to do much reading!) and saw this chicken Parm “burger”. It certainly caught my eye, however I wanted something a bit lighter. A lighter version of a chicken Parmesan burger. That’s when it dawned on me that I could use ground chicken and grill it versus frying it. These beauties turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I am happy to be able to share this recipe with you. ~Christina
