Jump to Recipe
Rocky Road Squares are ridiculously easy to make and these beauties are a perfect dessert for any occasion. They hold very well at room temperature and fulfill the sweet and salty craving, all in one bite!
Ingredients for Rocky Road Squares
- 1 package (10 1/2 oz.) miniature marshmallows
- 2 cups dry roasted, salted peanuts
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 package (12 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk

Growing up my mom would always have homemade snacks, whether they were for after school or pool parties at my house. Aside from her famous (well “famous” to my childhood friends) boneless fried chicken tenders, these Rocky Road Squares were a huge hit! Later on when I asked for the recipe I couldn’t believe just how simple these are to make.
How to make Rocky Road Squares
Start by combining the marshmallows and peanuts in a large bowl. Next, add the butter into a medium pot on low heat. Once the butter has melted, pour in the semi-sweet chocolate chips and give it a quick stir. Lastly add in the sweetened condensed milk and continue to stir, on low heat, until the chocolate chips have melted.
To finish this recipe, remove the melted chocolate mixture from the stove and pour over the marshmallows and peanuts. Mix everything together making sure the marshmallows and peanuts are coated evenly. Lightly grease the bottom of a 9×13 dish and place a piece of wax or parchment paper on the bottom. I grease the bottom of the dish so the wax paper doesn’t move around while you are pouring the mixture on top. Take the mixture, scoop into the dish and gently press down with a spatula to spread it. I also found that using a piece of wax paper to evenly spread the mixture works really well. Try it! Place the finished Rocky Road Squares in the refrigerator, uncovered, for 2 hours. Once chilled, cut up into squares and serve.
I hope your friends and family enjoy this version of Rocky Road.~Christina
FAQ’S:
Q: Can I use a different chocolate besides semi-sweet?
A: Of course! You can use dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate. Nestle Toll House has a lot of varieties. I encourage you to try something different. And please let me know what you’ve tried.
Q: What if I can’t find the miniature marshmallows?
A: You can buy the original size marshmallows and cut them into small pieces.
Q: Can I use another type of peanut instead of the salted, dry roasted peanuts?
A: Absolutely! The salted, dry roasted peanuts have a nice taste to them and pair very well with the semi-sweet chocolate chips, but there are so many varieties that Planters offers you can certainly find a peanut to your liking.

Notes
- I like to spray the bottom of my 9×13 dish with PAM then place the piece of wax paper. Doing this keeps the wax paper from moving around while pouring the mixture in the dish.
- I find that using a piece of wax paper, to spread out the mixture, makes it a lot easier than using a spatula.
